Sarah Hyland Reveals Suicidal Thoughts Amid Health Struggles

Sarah Hyland has confessed she was "very, very, very close" to taking her own life after her first kidney transplant failed.

Following a series of surgeries, the 28-year-old "Modern Family" star debated suicide because she didn't know if she'd ever feel well.

'After 26, 27 years of just always being sick, of just being in chronic pain every single day, you just don't know when you're going to have the next good day'.

Appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she said: "I would write letters in my head to loved ones of why I did it and my reasoning behind it, how it was nobody's fault". And I didn't want to write it down on paper because I didn't want anyone to find it. ... "That's how serious I was".

Though she was "very, very, very close" to taking action, Hyland ultimately pulled herself out of her depression after voicing her thoughts to a friend.

"It ended up being myself that got me out of that". "I had to do it on my own, I told myself I had to do it on my own".

"I was very, very, very close", Hyland told DeGeneres.

"Just saying it out loud helped immensely because I kept it to myself for months and months at a time. I didn't want anyone to know I was that close because if I knew, they would try to persuade me".

Throughout it all, Hyland remained working on Modern Family (she was written out of some episodes so that she could recover comfortably).

"Every person with their anxiety or depression or if you have suicidal thoughts, every individual is different, so I wouldn't just rely on everything that I say", she said. "And saying it out loud really helped me", Hyland said.

Hyland told the magazine she doesn't know why the organ gifted to her by her father didn't take properly.

"I finally said it out loud to someone", she recalled. "You can just talk to me'".

As we previously reported, the Modern Family starlet opened up about contemplating suicide over her kidney struggles, having had two transplants.

And now, nearly two years on from the second procedure, the four-time SAG Award victor says she's feeling much better and can now enjoy her life, including vacations to Mexico with her boyfriend of over a year, Bachelor in Paradise's Wells Adams.

"I found out like a few months into our relationship that it was really just a coincidence and he didn't fly to L.A. just for me", she quips. Hyland thanks the cast and her "amazing support system" for helping her through some of her trying times.
