Deadline have reported that Paramount Pictures have lined up Craig Brewer (Empire, Black Snake Moan, My Name Is Dolemite) to direct the film and Eddie Murphy will reprise his role as Akeem.

Much like Mr. Randy Watson and his iconic band, Sexual Chocolate, plenty of people have been wondering about Coming to America's main character, Prince Akeem, after he married Lisa and headed home to Zamunda.

Part of the reason that Brewer landed the gig was his recent involvement with Eddie Murphy, having just directed the actor in the upcoming Netflix film, Dolemite Is My Name.

Black-Ish's Kenya Barris is now re-writing a script by the original writers of Coming To America, Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield. Murphy is producing with Kevin Misher and Barris is exec producer.

There's nothing further to report at this time, but Deadline says Coming to America 2 is expected to go into production sometime this year. "The intention is to bring back the original cast which includes Arsenio Hall, who played the prince's aide Semmi, Shari Headley, who was courted by the prince when he went undercover as a fast food worker, John Amos, who played her father, and James Earl Jones, who played the king". "We've assembled a great team that will be led by Craig Brewer, who just did an awesome job on Dolemite [Is My Name], and I'm looking forward to bringing all these classic and beloved characters back to the big screen".

"Craig's ability to create a distinct cinematic world with each of his films is not only impressive, but also what made him exactly the voice and vision we needed to bring this story to life", added Barris. Here's hoping Brewer, Murphy, screenwriter Kenya Barris and company serve up something that honors the original. We're nervous and skeptical about this one, but mostly we're just hyped.
