Madrid won the game 3-0 thanks to goals from Sergio Ramos, Lucas Vazquez and Vinicius Jnr.

Real have confirmed Courtois has been diagnosed with a grade one injury, the least severe possible, and he was left out of the squad to face Leganes in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday night. Los Blancos put in a brilliant and colourful display throughout the match, which was rewarded with a vital first leg advantage and also the opening win of the 2019 calendar year after a draw and defeat.

Madrid opened the scoring via Sergio Ramos' 44th-minute penalty - controversially awarded for a foul on Alvaro Odriozola by Gerard Gumbau.

"It's a great result, having scored the three goals and not conceding any", Real Madrid defender Nacho Fernandez said.

The 26-year-old was clearly annoyed with the decision, and liked a post on Twitter from the dressing room which criticised the decision. It looked good for Real Madrid, but Vinicius made it better with a brilliant finish to make it 3-0.

Barca, who have stretched their lead over nearest challengers Atletico Madrid at the top of the table to five points, host Eibar on Sunday, while Atletico entertain Levante and third-placed Sevilla visit Athletic Bilbao.

Ramos, Casemiro and Karim Benzema were the only regular starters in Madrid's starting lineup. Even Brahim Diaz tried to do wonders within seconds of coming on and if Santiago Solari is somebody who selects players based on form, then he must not mind playing this same eleven against Real Betis over the coming weekend.
