The return leg of this tie is one of three matches Barca must negotiate within the space of eight days, but this disappointing result leaves Valverde with little scope to rest the likes of Messi, Suarez and Gerard Pique next time around.

Barcelona suffered a shock 2-1 defeat in the first leg of their Copa del Rey last-16 tie at Levante on Thursday.

Levante did have their second in the 18th minute, however, when Boateng's clever pass found Borja Mayoral and the on-loan Real Madrid forward managed to squeeze his low effort through Murillo's legs and into the back of the net.

The second half picked up from where the first off finished as Barca goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen was into action on two occasions by Mayoral and Moses Simon in the opening 15 minutes.

Ernesto Valverde's no.2 Aspiazu was asked about Coutinho's recent form, where he made some interesting comments.

Levante, who did enjoy a 5-4 La Liga win over Barcelona last season, were ahead after just four minutes through Cabaco as the defender rose highest to nod in Ruben Rochina's free-kick from six yards. The Brazilian, the club's record signing at €160 million, had endured a frustrating night before scoring the late penalty.

Barcelona assistant manager Jon Aspiazu spoke of Philippe Coutinho's current form, suggesting that Ousmane Dembele is now outperforming his teammate. And if one of them isn't happy, they have to fight to turn things around.

"Denis is in a different position to Munir [El Haddadi], because Denis can play for us in any match and he is always available".

"This is a period of the season when fixtures come thick and fast and we will need to make rotations, I am aware of this and so are the players".
