Fret was shot eight times while riding his motorbike in the street at around 5.30am, according to local media.

Fret had been described as Latin Trap music's first openly gay artist and his manager, Eduardo Rodriguez, said he was an "an artistic soul" who had a passion for music. He was taken to the Medican Center of Rio Piedras, where he was later pronounced dead.

"Kevin was an artistic soul, a big-hearted dreamer", his manager Eduardo Rodriguez said in a statement. This violence must stop.

He was best known for his 2018 hit "Soy Asi", and as a featured artist on Mike Duran's "Different".

Fret was an outspoken advocate for the LGBT community, and was one of the few well-known gay rappers on the island nation.

"We must all unite in these hard times, and ask for much peace for our beloved Puerto Rico", the statement further read.

"I'm a person that doesn't care what anybody has to say", he told online magazine Paper previous year. "[I see] young gay guys or young lesbians that are looking at me now like a role model, like wow, if he did it, and he don't care what anybody else has to say, I can do it". Fret's murder is the 22nd reported homicide in the country during the first 10 days of 2019.
