Spanish midfielder, Cesc Fabregas, has joined Ligue 1 side Monaco from English Premier League side Chelsea, the two clubs said on Friday.

The 31-year-old Fabregas is young enough to be considered a big signing for Monaco and he could have a major bearing on the club's chances of staying up.

Fabregas left the pitch in tears after making his final appearance for Chelsea in last Saturday's FA Cup third round win over Nottingham Forest.

And on the £10m switch, new No.44 Fabregas told Monaco's official website: "It is a great pleasure to join AS Monaco, a new project for me". Have your say in the comment section below.

He has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with Monaco, who are 19th in Ligue 1 and coached by his former Arsenal teammate Thierry Henry.

After starting out with Arsenal as a roaming attacking midfielder with a clinical eye for goal and a deft pass, Fabregas moved into a deeper-lying position over the years where his vision of the game and outstanding passing range helped him to remain influential in games with Chelsea.

Fabregas played with Henry at Arsenal at the start of his career, between 2003 and 2007, and the two share the same agent in Darren Dein.

Chelsea have paid a heartfelt tribute to Fabregas following his departure.

AC Milan had previously shown an interest in signing him, but they were priced out of a deal due to upcoming Financial Fair Play sanctions.

"This is obviously a very good technical reinforcement for the team but we are convinced that his experience at the highest level will bring a lot to our players on and off the field".
