Padraig Harrington has been confirmed as Europe's captain for the 2020 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin.

"It's not something I take on without a certain amount of trepidation", he told a news conference at the European Tour's headquarters.

Harrington played in six Ryder Cups and was on the winning team four times.

"Because you are putting it on the line when you become Ryder Cup captain".

Harrington's seemingly only rival ahead of Tuesday's 1pm (UK time) announcement is Paul Lawrie but with both McGinley and Clarke as two on the five-man voting panel it was always be Harrington.

Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: "Padraig Harrington says he has been encouraged by the support for him as the new Ryder Cup captain but it hasn't done enough to increase the confidence of punters".

"I'm thrilled to be named as Ryder Cup captain for 2020, it's not something I went into lightly", he said. "I'm really conscious that I have to find that edge and add to it".

Players must be a member of the European Tour to take part in the competition and, under regulations introduced in January 2017, "cannot be a European Ryder Cup captain or a vice-captain if they decline membership of the European Tour or fail to fulfil their minimum event obligation in any season, from 2018 onwards".

"I will try and bring that all together and hopefully say the right things at the right time and get the best out of that team that provides a winning performance".

Harrington said he knew what his goal would be over the next two years with respect to the players. "I am very much looking forward to taking on this role".

"But it is daunting because you want to do a good job". How am I going to feel about that?'

Following Europe's demolition of the United States in France previous year, Harrington had been viewed as the only candidate to preside over a defence.

I think it's fair to describe the appointment of Harrington as a no-brainer.

The 2020 Ryder Cup will be played at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin, site of three PGA Championships.

Padraig Harrington's immediate future has been unveiled to all and sundry. "Good guy. Tough. Not a man to underestimate".

"He has done three vice-captaincies and I think he's ready for this job".

Asked if he would be willing to do something similar, Harrington replied with a smile: "You know, we're all about continuity on the European Tour". He's tough but very straight. He's as straight as they come. When you're a player, you are exclusively concerned with your ability to perform on the biggest stage of all and trying to get your game in optimum shape. "But there's no messing from his side".
