The woman did not report the incident at the time, but was prompted to when Becker took on another prominent role in Sanders' 2020 efforts, shoring up potential staffers - including his alleged victim - and making trips to the early voting states.

Becker, 50, has denied the allegations.

According to POLITICO, Mr. Becker "oversaw Sanders' Iowa campaign, then helped lead his efforts in Michigan, California and NY as deputy national field director" and has reportedly started calling former staffers to prep for Sanders' potential 2020 run over the past few months.

The allegation comes as dozens of former Sanders campaign workers have signed a letter requesting a meeting with him "to discuss the issue of sexual violence and harassment on the 2016 campaign".

"It just really sucks because no one ever held him accountable and he kept pushing and pushing and seeing how much he could get away with". The victim did not formally report the incident at the time, but said she's now coming forward to ensure this doesn't happen again in 2020. "You can't run for president of the United States unless you acknowledge that every campaign demands a safe work environment for every employee and volunteer", the woman continued. He said he considered the allegation to be credible.

"Robert Becker would not be a part of any future campaigns", the statement said, "No one who committed sexual harassment in 2016 would be back if there were a 2020 campaign". But Jeff Weaver, who ran Sanders' 2016 campaign, stressed then that Becker was not doing so in an official capacity as he "doesn't work for the campaign because there is no campaign". The Vermont senator also said he wasn't aware of a reported $30,000 settlement Becker was named in to resolve a discrimination claim against his 2016 campaign. Female staffers also claimed they were paid significantly less than their male counterparts or subordinates.

"During the process of routine background checks being conducted, I would occasionally be asked to review potentially questionable or damaging social media posts of potential hires", Becker said in reply to that allegation.

Other former staffers spoke about experiences of sexual misconduct on the campaign trail to the the New York Times, which published a story earlier this month.

Trump himself has been accused by several women of sexual misconduct, but has denied the allegations.

Sen. Sanders addressed the allegations on CNN in a manner that some regarded as dismissive.

Sen. Bernie Sanders on Thursday apologized to women who have shared experiences of harassment by male supervisors while working on his 2016 US presidential campaign.

"To women in our campaign who were harassed or mistreated, I apologise", the Vermont independent wrote in a statement on Twitter on Thursday.
