When they receive notifications about activity by the front door, they checked the security camera and were shocked to see a man licking the doorbell while staring into the camera.

The owners of the house in Salinas were not at home when it happened, but their children were inside sleeping at the time.

"I go, '5am in the morning?' My son doesn't get home till 6am, well then who the heck is that?"

For three hours, the defenceless doorbell could not ring for help, save for the short breaks the trespasser took - to urinate on the porch and also lie down to rest for 20 minutes.

Police identified the man as Roberto Daniel Arroyo, 33, and located him on Monday night.

She said at the end of the day no real harm was done. Dungan and her family reported the incident to the police after they saw the footage.

"You kind of laugh about it afterwards because technically he didn't do anything", Sylvia Dungan told KION, another local news outlet.

Mr Dungan said his wife published the video on social media because they wanted to alert the community. Arroyo could face misdemeanor prowling, theft and violation of probation charges, Cabrera said. Arroyo did not have the extension cords in question and declined to comment about the allegations, Cabrera said. The case has now been forwarded to the Monterey County District Attorney's office for review and prosecution.

The family also made clear that they had gone to great efforts to clean the affected doorbell.
