The "E" is meant to stand for "Evolution" and will be displayed in areas where AT&T's service conforms to certain advanced characteristics of 4G LTE service. Regardless of the aesthetic change, AT&T phones are not running on a 5G network.

While those improvements should help boost LTE speeds, it doesn't bring them anywhere near what 5G will be capable of. Verizon is anxious that some will "over-hype and under-deliver" as temptation slides in for the awesomeness that is the future of 5G. Now, rivals like Verizon and T-Mobile are both getting in on the action as well, hammering the company for its decision. Though Malady doesn't call out AT&T directly, it's pretty clear what this letter is a response to.

T-Mobile's criticism of AT&T is a little more lighthearted than Verizon's.

Verizon took a minute to stand on a soapbox this morning and warn the wireless industry that they shouldn't over sell 5G.

Earlier today we reported that T-Mobile was taking AT&T to task for its decision to seemingly deceive customers by changing 4G LTE labels on consumers' smartphones to "5G E" with a software update.

"If network providers, equipment manufacturers, handset makers, app developers and others in the wireless ecosystem engage in behavior created to purposefully confuse consumers, public officials and the investment community about what 5G really is, we risk alienating the very people we want most to join in developing and harnessing this exciting new technology", wrote Malady. "That's 23 quarters in a row where more than 1 million customers have chosen T-Mobile - along with a postpaid phone churn result that's below 1%".

For those of you that aren't aware, AT&T has announced that it will begin displaying a "5G E" logo on certain Android devices in lieu of the standard LTE icon.
