Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 is sleeker, more powerful than ever before

If you've looked at the big CLS, you've pretty much seen the CLA.

Showcased at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the second generation Mercedes-Benz CLA Coupe is, according to our honest opinion, looking great. The smoother body helps the CLA to look more expensive than it really is, and the aerodynamics have been improved.

On that note, the CLA is a good 139mm longer and 7mm lower than the A-Class sedan, while riding on the same 2729mm wheelbase, and in practical terms it offers similar headroom in the front but 36mm less in the back thanks to that sloping roofline, while the boot actually swallows 40 litres more (460). This version makes 221 horsepower, a 13-horse increase over the predecessor, and 33 more than in the A-Class. Front-wheel drive is standard with 4Matic all-wheel drive as an option, and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is the only transmission choice.

It is 48mm longer, 53mm wider and 2mm lower than current CLA model.

That's all for now, expect the CLA to arrive in SA later this year. Similarly, the high performance AMG models also sustained their momentum in the performance segment from past year, particularly spear headed by the overwhelming response to the AMG E 63 S, the AMG GLE 43 Coupe and AMG GLC 43 coupe.

Inside, the all-new CLA-Class shares the same interior design as the other new compact A-Class siblings. For example, the voice assistant, activated by the keyword "Hey Mercedes, ' is able to recognize and answer considerably more complex queries", says Sajjad Khan, member of the divisional board of Mercedes-Benz cars for CASE and head of digital vehicle and mobility. First released in the new A-Class, it replaces the previous COMAND system and comes with a variety of wireless connectivity features, and touchscreen / hand gesture functions. "Instead it only responds to the commands of the person who last said 'Hey Mercedes" to activate the system".

The rest of the interior is almost identical to the A-class, with a funky dashboard design, two standard 7.0-inch screens (10.3-inch units are optional), and a more playful use of materials than in other Benz models. Other options include a slew of driver assist systems from the top-rung S-Class such as active adaptive cruise control, lane-change assist, steering assist and parking assist.

We were impressed by the refinement, chassis, powertrain, and tech found in the new A-class, and the second-gen CLA looks to improve further on all of the A's strong points. Frameless doors also continue to be a highlight of the new four-door coupe.
