An image circulating on social media which shows black and white children seated at separate tables, apparently at Laerskool Schweizer Reneke.

"From the information I got from the meeting, it seems that there are a lot of cases here of racism", provincial Education Minister Sello Lehari said after visiting the school.

18 white children were seated on the longest table, seemingly at the centre of the classroom, while the four black kids were displaced at the furthest corner, away from the classroom's activities.

According to the mother, she dropped of her child at school and around 9am, the teacher posted a photo of the grade R classroom on WhatsApp to give the parents an update on their kids.

"MEC for Education (Lehari) willlead a team comprising senior managers to the school who will also conduct an intensive investigation into the matter and action to be taken will be informed by the outcomes of these investigations", Mokgoro's spokesperson Vuyisile Ngesi said.

The outcome was that the teacher allegedly responsible for separating the children has been suspended with immediate effect, reports eNCA.

There have been calls to shut down the private school while others said it was proof that racism was still rampant in everyday life across South Africa.

The woman, who was not named, told TimesLIVE: 'This was meant to be an exciting day for me but it's not.

She said no one said a thing about the separation of the grade R class, so, she spoke to another parent outside of the WhatsApp group.

"On behalf of the department, I wish to condemn in its strongest terms any allegation of racism in our schools which contradict the constitution of our country".

Meanwhile, the picture has since gone viral on social media.

The removal appears to be as a result of fears surrounding safety, amid protests gathering momentum outside the school which appear to be led by EFF members.

The school apologised and de-segregated classes.

"We want the principal of the school to account".
