Former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson shared some candid thoughts about President Donald Trump and his time in the administration in a rare interview, taking some of his sharpest swipes at his former boss since he was sacked in March.

During his CBS interview, Tillerson also said that while working for the president, he often found himself having to check Trump's suggested plans of action by reminding him of the burden of legality.

Tillerson left the administration in March 2018 after a rocky tenure, during which he frequently clashed with Trump.

"I think he grew exhausted of me being the guy every day that told him he can't do that and let's talk about what we can do", Tillerson said. Or basic civic values, like "The treaty says we can't do that"?

According to The Houston Chronicle, he also took aim at Twitter, which the President often uses to introduce policy, announce staff changes (including Tillerson's departure), rally support from his base and air his grievances on various issues, among other things.

Tensions ratcheted up after NBC News reported that Tillerson had publicly referred to Trump as a "moron". "It's really a concern I have about us as Americans, and us as a society, and us as citizens".

The biting words came after Tillerson, in an appearance at a charity event in Houston, said their relationship soured over Trump's repeated demands that Tillerson do things that were illegal. "Now it is a whole new ballgame, great spirit at State!"

Mr Trump said in response that Mr Tillerson "didn't have the mental capacity needed for the job" and that he "couldn't get rid of him fast enough". "It violates the law".

Trump struck a remarkably different tone on Twitter from he did when he first hired Tillerson in December 2016. In some respects, that looks like impulsiveness, but it's not his intent to act on impulse. Next to his other comments, though, it wasn't hard to see he was lumping Trump with all those Americans who aren't intellectually curious enough about policy and the actual details of US government.

In his comments, Tillerson described the president as "pretty undisciplined". In it, he described what he perceived as a hard working relationship with President Trump.
