President Trump said Friday he will nominate William Barr to replace Jeff Sessions as his attorney general, and State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert as the next U.S. ambassador to the UN.

Barr, 68, a well-respected Republican lawyer who served as attorney general from 1991 to 1993 under President George H.W. Bush, has emerged as a favorite candidate of a number of Trump administration officials, including senior lawyers in the White House Counsel's Office, these people said.

It is unclear how Barr views that investigation.

A source close to Barr says he is likely to accept the job if offered.

On paper William Barr looks like a safe pick for United States attorney general.

President Trump announced he will nominate William Barr to serve as the next attorney general.

More of note than Barr's experience in the role may be comments he made as recently as 2017.

In a May 2017 op-ed in The Washington Post, Barr argued President Trump made the right call in firing Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey. Barr is now an attorney for Kirkland and Ellis, a high-profile Washington, D.C., law firm.

Trump has come under criticism by members of Congress for naming Whitaker, Sessions's chief of staff, as the acting attorney general instead of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

Last November, Barr told the New York Times that he thought there was more of a case for investigating the Clinton Foundation's role in Russia's acquisition of Uranium One than there was for the Russian Federation investigation.

"I've seen very good things about him even over the last day or so, when people thought it might be Bill Barr [as the nominee]", the president said.

Trump heavily derided Mueller's team earlier this year for being comprised of many registered Democrats and Democratic donors.

"I have worked with him for over 25 years and I believe it would be a great choice", Cullen told ABC News.

He also wrote an op-ed for The Washington Post in May 2017 defending Trump's decision to fire former FBI Director James Comey, one of the actions Mueller has been examining for possible obstruction of justice.

When leading the Justice Department, Barr oversaw the agency's response to the country's savings and loan crisis, the investigation of the Pan Am 103 bombing and America's counter-terrorism strategy during the first Gulf War. Barr was one tough lawyer.

At least one other contender who has received serious consideration from the White House, according to the person, is Rep. John Ratcliffe, a Texas Republican.
