The channel reported on December 5 that us military officials have asked the State Department to notify Turkey of possible plans for a navy ship to pass through the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles, the waterway which bisects Istanbul and which connects the Mediterranean to the Black Sea.

CNN cited three unnamed USA officials as the source for the report, which could not be immediately confirmed.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday it has appealed to the Budapest Memorandum guarantor countries the United States, Britain and Russian Federation, for urgent consultations over the tension in the Kerch Strait.

The notification will give the US Navy an option to enter the area, but it is not an indication that such action will be taken, the sources were quoted as saying in the report.

Moscow branded Kiev's stunt in the Kerch Strait as a unsafe provocation, while the European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation called for a de-escalation of tensions, while Kiev declared a 30-day martial law.
