CNN's Brian Stelter tweeted that the headquarters had been evacuated while NYPD investigates.

Staff in offices and studios fled the 24-hour news network's building after several fire alarms went off about 10.30pm.

The NYPD said on Twitter: "Due to a police investigation at Columbus Circle, West 58th Street between 8th and 9th Avenue is closed to traffic and pedestrian traffic".

The bomb threat was called in while CNN's Don Lemon was in mid-broadcast.

This was the third time that CNN had faced an evacuation over bomb threats. We grabbed what we could and got out of the building and now, we are standing outside of the building, ' Lemon said on CNN.

"We were evacuated in the middle of my live show", Lemon tweeted.

Chris Cuomo also tweeted about the incident, but said employees expected to be allowed back into the building 'ASAP'.

Authorities are investigating a reported bomb threat at CNN's NY office.

Bomb squads were put on standby in case any devices were found, police said.

Many observers pointed out that, not before the threat has been made public, President Donald Trump had posted a barrage of frantic tweets including one context-less attack on the press: "FAKE NEWS - THE ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE!"

A day later they were evacuated again due to a suspicious package that was later declared as safe.

In October, CNN's NY headquarters was evacuated after a package containing a crude pipe bomb, which was addressed to ex-Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) chief John Brennan, was found.
