Mr Trump repeatedly criticised Mr Bush Jnr's policies, not least his Middle Eastern military intervention, and defeated Jeb Bush, his brother, in the 2016 race for the Republican presidential nomination, dubbing him "low-energy Jeb".

President from 1989 to 1993, Mr Bush died on Friday at 94.

Bush was elected president in 1988 after serving two terms as President Ronald Reagan's vice president.

National flags flew at half-staff on many foreign diplomatic buildings on Washington's "Embassy Row", past which Bush's coffin will be transported on its way to the Washington National Cathedral for a memorial service on Wednesday.

In an invocation opening Monday evening's ceremony, the U.S. House chaplain, the Rev. Patrick J Conroy, praised Bush's commitment to public service, from Navy pilot to congressman, United Nations ambassador, envoy to China and then Central Intelligence Agency director before being elected vice president and then president.

"Here lies a great man", said Paul Ryan, the Republican House speaker, and "a gentle soul ... his legacy is grace perfected". They paused steps from Bush's casket for a minute, with Trump saluting and Melania Trump placing her hand over her heart, before they quietly walked away. Bush himself seemed to be holding back tears.

Dole received a Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his service in the 10th Mountain Division in World War II, before going on to serve as a congressman and a senator.

Dole was given the library's award for public service at the time.

December 5 has been declared a national holiday and that means there will be no mail delivery. They mingled for about 10 minutes, at one point George W. Bush held up a baby.
