As usual the update is available over the air and here's what is new.

Apart from the Haptic Touch, the iOS 12.1.1 also brings improvements for FaceTime interface, previously Apple had made some unnecessary UI changes to FaceTime with iOS 12 release, for instance, switching between the front and rear cameras has become confusing to the users. The update isn't too big; on an iPhone XS it's just 381.7MB. The new rollout includes improvements, and much awaited Haptic Touch for iPhone XR users since Apple had ditched the 3D feature, for cost-cutting and making it the cheaper entry-level iPhone of this year. Fortunately, Apple can also giveth back. iOS 12 brought a lot of new features but it also brought a few headaches for regular FaceTime users. With iOS 12.1.1, the button to switch the camera is on the main screen, bringing the process back to a single tap.

Be sure to backup your iOS device either via iCloud or by plugging it into a computer with iTunes. You most likely need to start a new line on a current in-market plan on eSIM, meaning you would have to give up your discounted or grandfathered plan. It's as simple as connecting to WiFi, then going to Settings General Software Update. From there, you can click Download and Install.
