Google didn't dispute this in any of their clarifications, only acknowledging that they'll soon offer Hangouts users the chance to use Hangouts Chat, which is now only available to G Suite customers as more of a collaboration tool. Google has now published a blog post to set the record straight, and it seems the rumors were mostly true.

After "pausing investment" in its smart messaging app Allo back in April, Google has now announced that it will stop supporting Allo altogether. According to 9to5Google, we can soon expect Google to announce the beginning of the end for the company's short-lived chat app. Google states that many of Allo's best features have made their way to Messages, and that they've chose to "stop supporting Allo to focus on Messages".

The company first launched Google Allo back in 2016, offering some interesting functionality for the time. With so much competition for instant messaging apps available like Facebook, Telegram, WhatsApp, WeChat, and Line – just to name a few, it doesnt make sense for Google to pursue Allos success when Android “Chat” and RCS is just around the corner. If you want to save any of your Allo conversations, you can export them through these instructions. The company has shifted focus to Messages for texting, Duo for video calls, and Hangouts Chat and Meet for G Suite customers. And after that it will be gone.

Android Messages and Duo will be a two-pronged attack. We don't know how these enterprise apps will change to accommodate regular users, but we'll know more when the time comes for Google to kill off Hangouts Classic. We've been working closely with the mobile industry to upgrade SMS so that people around the world can more easily enjoy group chats, share high-res photos, and get read receipts on any Android device.

If you are using Allo, you need to find something new pretty quickly.

Duo, a video chat app, also survives for now. "By refocusing on Messages and Duo for consumers and Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet for team collaboration, we're focused on delivering a simpler and more unified communications experience for all of you", writes Klainer.
