But, for the British, the surest sign of the start of the festive season is the release of the John Lewis Christmas advert.

Oh yeah, and Elton John's middle name is "Hercules".

Key moments include his stadium tours; first travel on a private jet, recording songs, playing the piano at a local pub and performing at a school recital.

In the ad it takes a look back at Johns life and career as a singer and delves into his childhood.

It's also the first time since the 1950s that pianos have been out on the shop floor at John Lewis, which is another moving touch - Christmas is all about nostalgia, after all.

United Kingdom press reports the campaign cost about £7 million ($12.6 million) and most of this was spent on buying media.

John Lewis is not necessarily known for having an extensive musical instrument range but there are a number of them featured on the website.

Global music icon Elton John was unveiled as the face of John Lewis' hotly anticipated annual Christmas ad on Thursday.

John Lewis partner and customer director Craig Inglis said the ad aims to illustrate "the magical feeling we wanted to bring to life this year".

"It has been a lovely opportunity for me to reflect on my life in music and the incredible journey I have been on, and how first playing my grandmother's piano marks the moments when music came into my life".

Coincidentally, the ad arrives the same week in the United Kingdom that tickets for John's global farewell tour.

Last year, the store's Buster the Boxer advertisement cost the equivalent of about $11 million. For example, the 2012 ad The Journey helped the retailer lift year-on-year sales by 44.3%.

The UK department store has done very well with this one, and it ties in nicely with their new offerings.
