Katherine "Scottie" MacGregor, best known for her role as Harriet Oleson on "Little House on the Prairie", died Tuesday in Woodland Hills, California, her representative confirmed to NBC News.

"Anyone that mean has to be a fool", MacGregor told NBC about her character.

They stood in contrast to the warm, loving members of the Ingalls family, who were the show's focus and often the Olesons' targets.

Born Dorlee Deane MacGregor in 1925 in Glendale, California, MacGregor grew up in Colorado. She appeared on "Mannix", "Emergency!," and "All in the Family".

Little House star Melissa Gilbert paid tribute to MacGregor on Twitter.

"She was outspoken and hilariously amusing", Gilbert said on Instagram of MacGregor Wednesday. A truly gifted actress as she was able to play a despicable character but with so much heart. Her Harriet Oleson was the woman our fans loved to hate.

Her screen career consisted of tiny film roles and TV guest spots before she landed on Little House on the Prairie, the TV series based on a beloved book series that author Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote about her childhood.

Gilbert added: "I really loved her and I find great comfort knowing that she is at peace", according to an Instagram post.

"She had an EXTREMELY long, full life and is at peace". She attended Denver University where she was active in the drama club, and graduated from Northwestern University.

After moving to NY following graduation, she changed her name to Scottie McGregor and got her start as an actress on stage in the 50s, touring the U.S.in The Seven Year Itch, and landing a series of Broadway roles, including in the 1958 show Handful Of Fire.

Dispirited by the roles she was offered, she was planning a move back to Broadway when she was asked by her agent to meet with Little House On The Prairie director Michael Landon, who also starred in the show as Charles Ingalls.

People notes that, prior to her time on the hit series, she had guest roles on other popular TV shows such as "Ironside" and "All in the Family".
