Many members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations have expanding consumer classes and high population-growth rates relative to the rest of the world.

ASEAN's members - the Philippines, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Burma - have almost 650 million people, a combined economy of US$2.8 trillion, and are already Canada's sixth-biggest trading partner. On Monday, ahead of travelling to Singapore, Trudeau said he would have "more to say in due course" on free trade with the ASEAN countries.

That's also when the new USMCA trade deal is supposed to be signed, but there's a real possibility that neither will happen.

The issue is businesses and politicians who talk about being a partner in the region have retreated back towards the partner they know best - the United States, Wright said.

Those kinds of commitment issues pose a problem to trade with east Asia, a region where relationships are more valued than a business case or product.

"With Canada blowing hot and cold - this year we're there, next year we're not, economy goes down in the U.S".

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says politicians need to learn how to enhance citizen engagement through the use of social media in the face of leaders using those platforms to undermine democracy.

But experts warn Canada is at a fork in the road: Continue talks toward a group free-trade deal, which could come with big benefits but take years of painstaking work, or convince ASEAN nations that have not already done so to sign on to a newly ratified Pacific Rim trade deal, called the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership - or CPTPP for short. "He is in there to say we want to be part of (this)", said Charest, who's the honorary chairman of the Canada-ASEAN Business Council. "It will be put in the backdrop of this broader world to say, 'With everything that is happening on the trade front, all this makes sense for you and it makes sense for us'".

It's not that the Democrats have an axe to grind with Canada or Mexico, but they are indicating that they will obstruct and oppose just about every Trump initiative and that puts the trade deal in peril.

Trudeau said it is easier to push someone into being angry through a well-timed tweet than to pull them into a positive dialogue about issues. Hammering out a final agreement could take up to eight years, Charest said.

President of the Republic of Chile Sebastián Piñera and Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau will be visiting Singapore at the invitation of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, to attend the 33 ASEAN Summit and Related Summits as Guests of the ASEAN Chair.

The ASEAN summit also offers Trudeau a seat at a regional security gathering of 18 countries, including the U.S., China and Russian Federation.

The discussion was driven by U.S. President Donald Trump, who regularly uses Twitter to fire up his legions of followers and vent at his critics.
