The Pixel's Night Sight camera mode performs imaging miracles

The time for Night Sight for Google Pixel devices is here, and the release time is imminent.

Remember when Google launched the Pixel 3 and 3 XL handsets on October 9th and showed off the impressive Night Sight mode that made a mockery of the difficulty of taking photos in low-light conditions? Either way, Night Sight takes a bit longer than standard photos to capture, but the results are worth it. Once the photo is captured, the device will use all its machine learning skills to attempt to balance the color of your photo - instead of the super red or yellow or blue of the extra light you've let in on the subjects of your photo. That's all three generations of Pixel smartphones, all getting Night Sight "over the next few days" in their standard Google Camera app.

As noted on our recent Pixel 3 smartphone review, one big thing brought by the latest generation of Google's handsets is computational photography, which now supports two modes to improve the picture quality of still pictures: Super Res Zoom, and Night Sight.

Ahead of the official release today, the Night Sight mode leaked via a ported version of Google Camera app.

This feature brightens images taken in low-light scenarios. Google fixes all of that by selecting exposing the image, described as "collecting light" on the display of Pixel phone and on Pixel 3, it is capable of combining up to 15 frames to produce a well lit image. When it comes down to it, Night Sight is positively groundbreaking, not just for mobile photography, but photography in general.

When the scene is dark enough, Google will pop up a chip on the screen to suggest that you can take better picture using Night Sight.

I've been using Night Sight alongside the Pixel 3 this past week while visiting Paris and London. Additionally, the first-generation Pixel also lacks optical image stabilization, so it has to use shorter exposures, which can further compromise the quality compared to more recent hardware.
