Clarence House has included a nod to the late Princess Diana in a photo montage created to mark Prince Charles' 70th birthday.

But it is the apparent closeness between Charlotte, George and their grandparents that catches the eye.

He said: "I would like him to have more time with the children".

In a photo from back then, and several others like it, reveal that he was the spitting image of of his younger son, Prince Harry, back in the day.

He replied: "I'm not sure, it's rather like indigestion, many happy returns are not quite the same thing as you get older".

The idea of a new king ascending the throne at an age when most men have retired has prompted calls in the past for his elder son Prince William to succeed the queen instead.

The family is seen aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia during a three-week tour of Italy, which ended in Venice.

Kate and Meghan show off their individual style in the family's new portraits.

The Duchess of Sussex, who is pregnant with her first child, is in hysterics, while Camilla puts an arm around Charlotte and appears to be pointing to something. Prince George looked cute in his knee-high socks, shorts and loafers.

The family's clothing was clearly carefully considered. With the entire clan clad in blue and white, the royals show off their individual interpretations of the dress code, with Kate in a spotted shirtdress and Princess Diana's sapphire earrings and Meghan turning once again to a sleeveless, figure-hugging dress.

This is the first time a picture has officially been released of Prince Louis with the rest of the family.

Charles, whose 70th birthday is Wednesday, added: "Sometimes, when I leave my jackets on a chair with nuts in the pockets, I see them with their tails sticking out, as they hunt for nuts - they are incredibly special creatures".

Her words, in a family not known for their gushing sentiments in public, were remarkable, coming at a dinner in the ballroom of Buckingham Palace thrown in the Prince's honour.
