In crowded and congested cities, especially, many are reconsidering their transportation options.

The U.S. automaker said Wednesday it purchased scooter company Spin to expand its mobility services.

Earlier this year, Ford launched a strategic partnership with Purdue University to fund a project called Jelly; similar ride models were offered as part of a research study into determining how to best launch the scooters in different communities. Electric scooters are now illegal on public roads and pavements, but this week Bird, one of the biggest United States start-ups in this area, is launching in the Olympic Park in East London.

Ride-sharing giants Uber and Lyft also have been investing in scooter-sharing companies.

Ford is focused on delivering great products and services across the mobility spectrum, seeking to enhance the freedom of movement by building smart vehicles for a smart, connected world.

If you're wondering how the scooter evolved from a kid's toy to an urban phenomenon, "like so many inventions, the scooter was a child of necessity", Sarha Holder tells us in a recent piece for CityLab. Spin recently raised its Series A round and has a presence across major cities like San Francisco, Washington D.C., Miami, Dallas, Seattle, and Los Angeles.

California-based Spin operates in 13 cities and college campuses and plans to expand to several new markets in the coming months. "We think autonomous vehicles are going to undergo the same sort of scrutiny that scooters are in that sense".

"The acquisition of Spin is the latest strategic move by Ford in the mobility space, as the company builds a mobility portfolio to help customers get places more easily, more quickly and less expensively", the company statement says. This presents a significant opportunity as research shows almost half of all trips made in the US are 3 miles or less, according to "The Micro-Mobility Revolution", a report by Populus. The acquisition of Spin is an important step towards realizing our ambitious vision for the future of urban mobility and we couldn't be more excited to welcome Derrick, Euwyn, Zaizhuang, Benny, Ben and the rest of the team to Ford.

The trio started the business less than two years ago, launched their first mobility system last year and launched the company's scooter this year.
