Getting his deal off the books would not only allow the Yankees to sign Harper and play him every day at first base but would not break the bank should they pursue big-name pitchers to improve their greatest weakness, the starting rotation.

The 26-year-old slugger is primed to land a massive payday in free agency this offseason, and having reportedly turned down a 10-year, $300 million offer from the Washington Nationals, there's only one team that has a pressing need for his services and is willing to match Harper's desired price.

At the general managers meetings on Tuesday, Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo disclosed that the team had engaged in talks with Harper's agent, Scott Boras. According to reports, the Nats' offer is now off the table, but the team is still open to a deal.

As Allen pointed out, Harper's timing is interesting, as he has become a free agent after his contract with the Nationals expired at the conclusion of the 2018 season.

"He's shown the type of player he is, and now he's a grizzled veteran, " Rizzo said.

While Harper could be exploring other options, it's still possible he might return to the Nationals.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Cardinals do not have that much interest in Harper, despite fans and the media linking them to the star outfielder.

The total worth of Harper's next contract will largely be determined by its length, but the six-time All-Star is expected to ink a deal worth at least $31 million per year, according to Spotrac.

Regardless of what the New York Yankees say during the early parts of this offseason, they will continuously be linked to free-agent megastar Bryce Harper.

Putting Harper at first would allow the Yankees to keep their outfield intact and most importantly, keep Aaron Judge in right field. "He has done a lot in the game already, and he is just scratching the surface".

With Harper filling out the lineup, the Phillies have the potential to have a potent offense on paper.
