"But when he had the injury we needed to play with a right-back which was the reason we played with Ainsley [Maitland-Niles]". We'll have to wait for updates from Unai Emery after the game but let's pray it's not as serious as it seemed on TV. He broken something in his ankle'. He's helped us with his behaviour, with his quality and his capacity.

"The worst news tonight is these injuries", the Spaniard told a media conference. I think Danny was working well.

"You can see that we play with a different tactic now".

Caretaker Sporting boss Tiago Fernandes said: "The players did exactly what I asked them to do".

"They (Sporting) are a team with very good players, very good history, also in this competition. You don't want it to happen but this is our profession".

Sporting ended the game with 10 men when ex-Barcelona defender Jeremy Mathieu was shown a straight red card after fouling Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who was clean through, although the hosts could not find a winning goal.

The 27-year-old has been riddled with fitness problems since joining the Gunners from Manchester United for a fee of £16million four years ago.

But it was Welbeck's injury just before the half hour mark that was the main talking point from a largely forgettable Emirates Stadium encounter.

The incident knocked the wind out of Arsenal's sails but Welbeck's replacement Aubameyang hit the crossbar as the visitors offered very little in terms of an attacking threat.

Arsenal had already beaten Thursday's opponents in this season's tournament, triumphing 1-0 in Portugal last month, and Emery said the draw at the Emirates had demonstrated the significance of securing that prior win in Lisbon.
