The 2018 Midterms Were an Achievement for Women

The Democratic victory in the U.S. House of Representatives could echo from Moscow to Beijing to Riyadh, with empowered Democrats now able to launch new investigations into President Donald Trump's worldwide business empire and his political dealings with the rest of the world.

An expanded majority in the Senate will allow Republicans to continue confirming Trump's nominees to key posts. Bernie Sanders offered a preview of what he hopes the party, led by its incoming House majority, will offer up.

But Neal's committee also will embrace an adversarial role, given the party's wins Tuesday.

"I only had me".

"I can see it being extremely good politically", he said. While it wasn't the "blue wave" some had predicted, Democrats successfully flipped the House of Representatives and progressed toward more gender-balanced representation in Congress. Thanks to the 2018 midterm elections, 113 women now serve in Congress-surpassing the current record of 107 according to the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University. At least 87 new congresswomen will enter the House, of whom all but a dozen are Democrats. "On the other hand, you had some that made a decision to, 'Let's stay away". Let's stay away.' They did very poorly. John Cornyn, R-Texas, talks with reporters on Capitol Hill, Thursday, Oct. 11, 2018 in Washington. His immigration and trade policies are not simply ill-informed but deeply disturbing from a moral perspective (the United States shouldn't be keeping out refugees and asylees from countries we helped to destroy). "Angers me to my core".

"So it is possible, though the odds are against it, that Trump will find a way of working with a Democratic house of representatives". But it wasn't clear that either party emerged with a clear mandate, save for Democrats claiming the country wants to see them conduct oversight on Mr. Trump.

"They can play that game, but we can play it better".

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, the GOP leader who will have to forge a partnership with Mrs. Pelosi, said they worked together when they were both senior members of foreign operations appropriations subcommittees in their respective chambers.

The U.S. and Saudi Arabia have always been key allies, and Trump made the country his first stop overseas as president. He also sidestepped repeated questions about upcoming staffing changes in his West Wing or Cabinet - including the fate of embattled Attorney General Jeff Sessions - but hinted that moves could be coming soon.

After Tuesday's election, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's return to her former speaker seat has been assumed, but Rep. Tim Ryan Thursday morning said that her return to power has yet to be determined. "As for the market impact, a split Congress has historically been bullish for equities and we expect to see the same pattern again", said Torsten Slok, chief worldwide economist for Deutsche Bank.

"I give her a lot of credit".

Blackburn said in her victory speech, "Now you don't have to worry if you are going to call me congressman or congresswoman or congress lady".

Worse for Mr. Trump, the share of voters who dislike him personally but like his policies increased in the past two years.

"It's a long agenda", the Democratic aide said. As in Florida, the Republicans hold both Senate seats and the governor's job. "I think that when you say things, they should count".

Trump had aggressively campaigned in the closing days of the race, his focus on boosting Republicans in states he carried in 2016. Republican Ron DeSantis ousted Democratic opponent Andrew Gillum by less than one percentage point in a hotly contested race in Florida; Mike DeWine won the governorship in OH; and Republican Brian Kemp was ahead of Democratic candidate Stacey Abrams by 1.6 points with 100 percent of precincts reporting.

Democrat Lindsey Williams is clinging to a narrow lead over Republican Jeremy Shaffer for GOP Sen. Claire McCaskill in Missouri and Republican Attorney General Mike DeWine defeating Democrat Richard Cordray in the race for OH governor. Republicans are pointing to Senate gains, even though all of them except an expected pickup in Florida came in deep-red states they should have won in the first place. And only twice in the past eight decades has the president's party picked up House seats in the midterms.

Trump's shadow loomed large over the results.

Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill said she is "confident in her support among members and members elect".

The results, Trump argued, were proof of his ability to turn out voters. But the president received negative marks from voters on temperament and trustworthiness. If the bills didn't pass, Trump could use this failure to lambast the Democrats for refusing to govern responsibly. Several television networks, including the president's favourite, Fox News Channel, yanked a Trump campaign advertisement off the air on the eve of the election, determining that its portrayal of a murderous immigrant went too far.
