In Jacksonville, the owner of Rain Dogs bar in Riverside's Five Points district said it's a sign of how hard it is to anticipate a shooter walking in and opening fire.

"My son was in Las Vegas with a lot of his friends and he came home". Orfanos made it out alive that night, and on Thursday morning, his mother, Susan Schmidt-Orfanos was hoping her son had been lucky again. He said, "I was concerned because I knew he had been in the military".

Long was in the Marine Corps from 2008 to 2013, reaching the rank of corporal and serving as a machine gunner in Afghanistan.

The gunman is also dead. "There's a fence right there so I said, 'Everyone get over the fence as quickly as you can.' And I followed them over".

Telemachus Orfanos was a graduate of Thousand Oaks High School and later joined the Navy, according to his Facebook page.

It is close to a number of universities, one of which confirmed that a recent graduate had been killed.

Justin Meek, 23, was a keen musician. Nearby California Lutheran University canceled classes on Thursday while Pepperdine University, about 20 miles away, planned a prayer service.

Fellow officers from the Ventura County Sheriff's Office described him as an "exceptional friend and man" who had served for 29 years as one of the most committed and hardworking officers on the force.

How did the shooting happen? The sheriff said it was possible that Long had suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder.

He threw a smoke grenade before opening fire, witnesses say. The weapon holds 10 rounds and one in the chamber, but the gunman's weapon had an extended magazine that is illegal in California, so it's unknown how many rounds the weapon held.

"It was a huge panic". I ended up getting caught in the ground and stumbled over by multiple people. "They couldn't get him to come out, so it was like a standoff for four or five hours". They don't go around shooting people. Mental health specialists talked with Long and determined that no further action was necessary. She escaped from the Borderline bar when the shooting began, hurting her knee as she ran onto a loading dock.

"She was the kind of girl that if you had friends, you'd want them to marry her", she said.

The Marine Corps said Long had attained the rank of corporal after serving almost five years, including seven months in Afghanistan. "It's a big thing for us". "And so we got everyone behind the pool table and down, and then there was probably six or seven of us dog-piling over the girls that were beneath us".

"Borderline was our safe space", Brendan Kelly, who survived both attacks, told ABC News.

Seargent Ron Helus of Ventura County Sheriff's Office was the first law enforcement official to arrive at the Borderline Wednesday night.

That number does not include an annual estimate of 22,000 suicides via firearms.

In the last two weeks alone, two people were shot dead by a man at a yoga studio in Florida, and another gunman opened fire on a synagogue in Pittsburgh, killing 11.
