"We're going to pursue the leads that develop from that evidence, wherever they take us, to identify any possible motivation, paint a picture of the frame of mind of the subject, identify any possible radicalization", Delacourt said Thursday.

When the shooting was over, 13 were dead, including the shooter who was found by responding officers.

Dean said in the news conference that some people who tried to escape the chaos by breaking windows might have been injured.

Sheriff John Dean recounted what Helus had told his wife, telling the LA Times: 'He said, "Hon, I got to go, I love you". He was set to retire next year, CNN reported.

"It's a horrific scene in there", Dean said in the parking lot.

Von Molt said she and others from nearby California Lutheran University often gathered on Wednesday night to line dance to country music.

Dean estimated that 10 to 15 people, including one with a gunshot wound, had gone to area hospitals. Once safely outside, the uninjured hugged and awaited word about those still inside. Coffman told reporters later Thursday that his son just wanted to be a good big brother to his siblings.

Ian David Long, who also died in the attack late on Thursday, was 28 years old and lived in Newbury Park, a prosperous suburb of Californian bungalows and tidy front lawns, about 6.4km from the Borderline Bar & Grill where the shooting took place.

Long was a veteran and served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

He attained the rank of corporal and saw combat while deployed in Afghanistan from November 2010 to June 2011.

It is believed that Long killed himself at the bar, Dean said.

A few weeks after the Vegas shooting, the bar held a benefit concert for five people from the area who were killed, and now-eerie social media posts show a number of survivors holding up a "Route 91" sign inside the bar at a six-month anniversary event.

Police have not identified a motive.

The hooded killer used a smoke bomb and a handgun, sending hundreds of people fleeing in terror.

Mr Dean said his department had several previous contacts with the former Marine including a call to his home in April, when deputies found him acting in an irate and irrational manner.

Federal Bureau of Investigation officials were seen visiting a residence believed to be Long's in Newbury Park, California, which neighbors Thousand Oaks.

The police called in a team of mental health specialists who decided that Long did not qualify to be involuntarily detained for mental health evaluation under state law. The extent of the victim's injuries has not yet been released.

"Ron was a hardworking dedicated sheriff's sergeant", he added, his voice cracking with emotion.

The Los Angeles Times quoted a law enforcement official as saying at least 30 shots had been fired.

"The first shot went off, I thought it was somebody playing a prank, but immediately I looked at him and he continued shooting", he said. God bless all of the victims and families of the victims. "Thank you to Law Enforcement", the president said in another tweet.
