Heathrow passengers delayed after runway lighting problem

Passengers are facing disruption at Heathrow Airport because of a problem with the runway lights.

"We are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible, but at this stage we anticipate that there will be some disruption at the airport throughout this morning", the statement read.

The problem left some London-bound passengers stranded at USA airports, with those travelling from Las Vegas, Miami and NY among those affected.

Passengers on flights to London's Heathrow Airport were delayed due to runway lighting problems, travelers complained on Twitter Wednesday. Pilot growing impatient as are passengers'.

Europe's largest airport said Wednesday that the problem had been resolved by 6:05 a.m GMT (12:05 a.m. EST) and that both runways are now open and operational. This included 11 flights delayed by more than 45 minutes. But travellers should check, as delays are expected throughout the morning.

For the latest information, passengers should check their flight status with their airlines before traveling to the airport.

"We have activated our contingency plans and both runways are now open and operational, although we anticipate there will be some delays at the airport throughout this morning", the airport said in an email to CNBC.

Out of 22 scheduled departures between 6am and 6.59am there was one cancellation and two flights delayed.

A Heathrow spokesman said: "Following an earlier, technical issue with the lighting system for the runways, contingency plans have been activated and both runways are now open and fully operational".

" Whilst we're continuing to monitor the situation, please check your flight status with your airlines before travelling: https://bit.ly/2zhmMco".
