Former Somali refugee and Minnesota state lawmaker Ilhan Omar has made history becoming the first Somali American to be elected in Congress. Omar also became the first Muslim congresswoman, along with Rashida Tlaib.

The seat Omar won, Minnesota's 5th district, was formerly held by Rep. Keith Ellison, who was the first Muslim to take a seat in Congress. Ellison did not run for re-election as he sought the state attorney generalship.

A Somali-American woman who lived briefly as a refugee at the Dadaab Refugee Camp in Garissa County has been elected to Congress in America's midterm elections.

"The first thing I think about when somebody says you're going to be the first Muslim is celebrate this moment", Tlaib told CBS News.

Omar arrived in the United States, aged 14, after fleeing civil war in Somalia.

"I want them to know as I uplift the families of the 13th Congressional District, I'll uplift them every single day being who I am as a proud Palestinian-American woman", she added, noting that for "so many years" Palestinians have "felt dehumanized".

Omar will also be the first Congress member to wear a Muslim hijab, or head scarf.

Republicans, with a strong grip on the senate, unseated a string of Democratic senators up for re-election in states Trump won in 2016.

"Regardless of whether we win or lose, this gets to shift the narrative of what is possible", she said.

Republicans who charge that the Democratic Party has departed from its pro-Israel bona fides point to Tlaib and Omar as proof. She ran unopposed on the general election ballot following her primary win. She has said she would vote to impeach President Donald Trump if given the chance.

Rashida Tlaib is the Detroit-born daughter of Palestinian immigrants -the eldest of 14 children.

"We did this, together", she wrote on Twitter Tuesday night.
