In the hope of developing Bixby into a platform that is used throughout a wide range of products, not just smartphones, Samsung is opening up its assistant to third-party developers for the first time through a new feature called Bixby Capsules.

As expected, Bixby was a big focus for the 2018 Samsung Developer Conference.

One thing worth noting is that these individual capsules will not be immediately present on Bixby-enabled smartphones.

These "Bixby experiences" will be offered through the Bixby Marketplace, so just like Skills on Alexa, you'll be able to browse through custom Bixby interactions that developers create so you can then add them to your devices. These are British English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish, all of which complement the existing US English, Chinese, and Korean. Focusing specifically on Bixby's integration with smart TVs, the new Media Control API will allow Bixby to control content from Netflix, Hulu, HBO Now, and Spotify on Samsung televisions. The Bixby Developer Studio opens up a world of possibilities for the company's assistant.
