Davis spent several days in jail in September 2015 after refusing to abide by that summer's historic US Supreme Court ruling that legalized same-sex marriage.

Elwood Caudill Jr.is the new Rowan County, Kentucky clerk, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader. He beat one of the gay men denied a marriage license by Davis, David Ermold, in this year's primary.

"When I say I will faithfully execute the job of Rowan County Clerk and serve all citizens equally". She said at the time that she can not comply because it would violate her conscience.

Kentucky later changed the law, so that marriage licenses statewide that no longer require county clerks' names to appear on them.

Ermold also claimed he had received numerous reports of Caudill making bigoted remarks, accused him of homophobia, and criticized LGBTQ rights organization Fairness Campaign for endorsing him.

With all 19 precincts reporting, preliminary results show Caudill earned 4,210 votes to Davis' 3,566. Davis was a Democrat before switching her party affiliation shortly after she refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses.
