Democrat Lesia Romanov was left with no living Republican opposition in the race for Nevada's 36th Assembly District - but lost.

Hof was found dead October 16 after a weekend of parties celebrating his 72nd birthday. Officials have not yet released a cause of death, but they do not think it was the result of foul play.

Around 20 brothels operate in Nevada - the only U.S. state where prostitution is legal.

Although it might initially sound galling that Democrats earned more votes but didn't get the majority, there's a reason for that: 35 Senate seats were on the ballot this year, and of those, 26 of them were held by Democrats, while only nine were held by Republicans.

Hof, who starred in the HBO reality television show "Cathouse" about the prostitutes working at one of his establishments, was running as a Donald Trump-style Republican. He had spent the four previous days partying with notables from the adult film industry and political world, like Jeremy and Joe Arpaio, the former Arizona sheriff who was convicted of criminal contempt of court but pardoned by Trump.

The district is heavily rural, containing large desert areas in the southern region of Nevada.

Hof ran on a platform based on deeply conservative ideals, including expansion of gun rights and a hard-line policy on immigration. The state doesn't publicize how many are open, and most owners keep a much lower profile than Hof did.

He upended Nevada politics this summer when he ousted an incumbent Republican lawmaker in a primary, celebrating at an election night party with "Hollywood Madam" Heidi Fleiss.

He said an anti-brothel push and regulatory problems he faced this year needed political retribution.

In June, Mr Hof won the nomination contest for a Republican state assembly seat, supported by Trump associates Roger Stone and Grover Norquist and evangelical Christians who said they voted for him because they believed he would clean up politics.

He said Hof appeared to have died in his sleep.
