The news, announced on the day the royal couple arrived in Sydney, took many by surprise, including the governor-general, Sir Peter Cosgrove, and Lady Cosgrove.

In a statement, Kensington Palace said: "Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the Spring of 2019".

Harry sat down first, followed by Meghan, and the prince watched on proudly as his wife, a former calligrapher, signed with a flourish.

In Australia, they will pet a koala in a Sydney zoo, visit the drought-stricken Outback town of Dubbo and meet indigenous leaders on Fraser Island, the world's largest sand island, in northeastern Queensland state.

In a November 2017 interview with the BBC after their engagement, the couple said they wanted to have children in due time.

During the outing, Meghan, who wore a tight-fitting cream dress by Australian designer Karen Gee, kept close to Harry, holding his hand throughout the event.

Royal family fans suspected Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were expecting a child for quite some time before the official announcement.
