Jeff Banister is out in Arlington.

Despite being the Rangers manager for the last four seasons, Bannister was sacked this afternoon. Bench coach Don Wakamatsu is the likely candidate to take over that role.

Banister was in the a year ago of his contract with the club, but there was an option for 2019. But unlike the Rangers, they're expected to wait until the end of the season.

Grant reports that there was an ongoing issue of communication this season between staff and players. "However, we feel that a change in the leadership of our Major League club is necessary as we move forward", said Rangers President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Jon Daniels.

Manager Jeff Banister #28 of the Texas Rangers looks on from the dugout during the ninth inning of a game against the Tampa Bay Rays on July 21, 2017 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. He leaves as the fourth-winningest manager in Rangers' history behind Ron Washington, Bobby Valentine and Johnny Oates.

The Rangers had a 64-88 record going into Friday night's game.

Banister won AL Manager of the Year in 2015 and won back-to-back AL West titles in his first two years on the job, but things have gone backwards quickly and this year they are on their way to 90 losses and finishing in last place.
