On Thursday, China - which is also locked in a trade war with Washington - got caught up in the sanctions war against Russian Federation as the United States announced a new raft of measures that would punish third countries for dealing with Moscow.

"The U.S. approach is a blatant violation of the basic norms of global relations, a full manifestation of hegemony, and a serious breach of the relations between the two countries and their two militaries", Wu said in a notice posted on the Chinese defense ministry's official Wechat account.

Russia has deployed S-400s in Syria, according to official Russian news media, and US officials have been discussing the interest other nations, particularly North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally Turkey, have expressed in buying the system.

Friday, the Russian government warned that the new sanctions - the 60th round against Moscow since 2011 - could lead to trouble for the United States.

"We strongly urge the U.S. to immediately correct their mistake and withdraw their so-called sanctions, otherwise the USA will have to bear the consequences".

"Playing with fire is silly, it can become unsafe", he said in a statement.

The State Department also placed 33 Russian intelligence and military-linked actors on its sanctions blacklist.

The defence equipment has the capability to bring down aircraft, missiles and even drones at ranges of up to 400 km and is known as Russia's most advanced long-range surface-to-air missile defence system.

However, officials tracking the developments on the deal say there has been an understanding between the two countries and the United States law should not come in the way of the deal.

The official, speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, insisted that the sanctions were aimed at Moscow, not Beijing.

"CAATSA sanctions in this context are not meant to undermine the defence capabilities of any particular country", the official said. The Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act was passed as a way to punish Russian Federation for meddling in the 2016 USA elections.

It comes after the U.S. enforced sanctions on China's Equipment Development Department (EDD) for what Washington described as "significant transactions" with Russian arms exporter Rosoboronexport.

Officials said there is an understanding with the U.S. government that with regards to India there needs to be a different position.

The new sanctions came as the United States and China are in the heat of a trade war.
