Assamese film Village Rockstars is India's official entry for Oscars 2019 in the Best Foreign Language film category. #VillageRockstars is India's official entry for the #Oscars! Notably, "Village Rockstars" had bagged the Best Feature Film trophy at the 65th National Film Awards, besides also winning Best Child Artist, Best Location Sound Recordist and Best Editing.

Das is the writer, director, cinematographer, editor and producer of Village Rockstars, which had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival 2017. In a world where nearly every step taken by females is questioned, 10-year-old Dhunu (Bhanita Das), who belongs to a remote village in Assam, wants to make a name for herself in the world of music.

With this, Filmmaker Rima Das had earlier told the leading daily that she had no storyboard for the film. The announcement was made by the Film Federation of India on the morning of 22 September 2018, Saturday. "Very proud and to select this film and send it to the Oscars", jury member Anant Mahadevan was quoted by The Indian Express as saying.

The coming-of-age film follows Dhunu, a girl who grows up in poverty and learns to fend for herself. She added that all the actors in the film, except renowned Assamese actor Kulada Bhattacharya, belong to her village.

On the next steps and the need to get her film seen and noticed by the Academy members, Das said: "I have heard that we need a good promotion campaign".

Last year, the Rajkummar Rao starrer "Newton" beat out all the competition to become the official selection, but sadly didn't make the cut to earn a nomination in the Foreign Language Film category. The gala is scheduled to be held on February 24, 2019.
