How to watch Tiger Woods at the Tour Championship on Friday

On a hot, stifling day, the 42-year-old took a buoyant opening stride towards that goal with an impressive 65 to share the first round lead with Ryder Cup team mate Rickie Fowler.

The South African Open victor in January for his first European Tour title, Paisley played the back nine first at Atlantic Beach Country Club, holing a bunker shot for an eagle on the par-5 18th.

It wasn't as low as the 62 he shot at Aronimink to share the 18-hole lead in the BMW Championship two weeks ago.

"I've got to make birdies and try and keep pace; this golf course is playing soft and tomorrow will be the same thing", Woods said.

And even though England's Justin Rose - the world No 1 who is one behind - is projected to top the FedEx Cup standings and scoop the $10 million (£7.5 million), it is hard to quantify how highly the "U.S.A, U.S.A" confidence would soar if Woods could finally end his five-year winning drought on the eve of the biennial dust-up.

"Once it reached its peak and I saw it was going through the wind I started walking (because) I knew it was good", he said. "I hit so many quality shots all day, whether it was tee to green or it was putts". He had finished his round and was doing interviews when he heard the head-turning roar of Woods making eagle. It's obviously great for our sport.

FedEx Cup leading Bryson DeChambeau had an East Lake debut he would rather forget in posting two double-bogeys over his opening nine on route to a round of 71. "I just want to play a little bit better and beat him". For someone like Woods or Fowler to win the FedEx Cup, they would need the top five seeds to falter.

The key for Woods could be Friday.

"But more than anything, I missed it all on the correct sides".
