Following are a few key moments from the 70th awards.

Johansson arrived to the red carpet with her SNL star boyfriend Colin Jost, who would later be co-hosting the Emmys with his Weekend Update co-anchor Michael Che.

Glenn Weiss won the outstanding directing for a variety special and told the audience the prize was "bittersweet" because his mother had died two weeks previously. Regina King was the first non-white Emmy victor on the telecast, taking home the statuette for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie for Seven Seconds, more than an hour into the show.

The other big story of the Hollywood gala, television's answer to the Oscars, was the huge success of "The Marvelous Mrs Maisel", Amazon's story of a 1950s housewife-turned-stand up comic, which took home eight Emmys overall, including the best comedy award. "Because I want to call you my wife", he declared to his bewildered and ecstatic partner Jan Svendsen.

London-born Thandie Newton won the supporting actress in a drama series for her part in HBO's sci-fi western Westworld, fending off competition in a category packed with British stars, including Stranger Things' Millie Bobby Brown, Game Of Thrones' Lena Headey and The Crown's Vanessa Kirby.

Thankfully, she said yes and the Emmy Awards got its first-ever onstage proposal. So if you haven't already registered, do it on your cell phone right now.

Producing his second Emmy telecast in three decades, SNL head honcho Lorne Michaels most definitely put his signature stamp on the evening.

And "Saturday Night Live" won the award for best variety sketch series.

But the ceremony in downtown Los Angeles quickly went off script, with sentimental favorite Matthew Rhys winning the Emmy for best drama actor for spy thriller "The Americans" and Claire Foy earning a statuette for "The Crown".

Finally, the ceremony proved beyond any doubt that streaming services have upended the TV industry and are a force to be reckoned with. The show is in the running for outstanding comedy, along with "Barry", "Black-ish", "Curb Your Enthusiasm", "GLOW", "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel", "Silicon Valley" and "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt".

The streamers' message to traditional TV network and cable companies was clear: watch your back.
