RIP iPhone: Apple discontinues its flagships

Three new iPhones are heading our way: the XS, XS Max, and the XR.

There's a good working theory that the iPhone X was an experimental phone that cost a lot to produce, and that Apple chose not to make it available at a discounted price to avoid cannibalising sales of the XS.

Lost in the fray of Apple's big hardware event was the announcement that it would no longer include a dongle, free of charge, with the purchase of a new iPhone. The story that got us to this point is actually rather long, and it involves Apple slowing down phones with old, worn out batteries to prevent random crashing. iPhone users naturally didn't take kindly to that remote throttling, so Apple made a decision to extend an olive branch to them and cut the price of battery replacement for the entirety of 2018. But remember, Apple used LCD screens up until last year's iPhone X, so longtime fans shouldn't feel the need to rebel.

Connections-wise Gareth confirms there is no headphone port, but that a pair of Lightning connector earbuds come packed in the box. It starts at $749 for the 64 GB model and will cost more for its 128 GB and 256 GB models.

Gareth does note though that the camera system also supports Smart HDR, which allows the iPhone XR to "really capture the high-end elements of a photo, fusing the light and dark elements well", and that the pictures he took were clear, sharp and colourful. It has a lower-resolution 6.1-inch LCD screen and a single rear-facing camera, but otherwise delivers on the specifications of the Xs series. But beware that if you're planning to buy an iPhone 8, it won't come with a dongle, either. Do you believe the new products are as good as we expected them to be? The XR has a 6.1-inch screen, which lands it right between the XS and XS Max in terms of size. Both factors that should conserve energy in comparison.

This has led to the iPhone XR being variously described as "cheap", "entry-level", or the "budget" iPhone for this year.

We know that the advanced custom OLED screen on the iPhone X was extremely expensive.
