Eighty-four percent of GOP members are behind the president, while his overall approval rating was 38 percent.

Instead, the president is repeatedly muddling that message with easily debunked falsehoods or hyperbole about the state of the economy while pressing on with unpopular trade wars that frustrate establishment Republicans and business groups anxious about price increases.

When it comes to the economy, meanwhile, 70 percent of Americans in Quinnipiac's poll say it is good or excellent, while CNN's poll found 69 percent calling the economy "good" and 26 percent "very good". The poll showed that 65 percent of the people surveyed believed Trump was not level-headed and 42 percent said he was not mentally stable.

In races for the US House of Representatives nationwide, American voters back Democratic candidates over Republicans by 52 to 38 per cent, the poll showed.

Trump's decreasing popularity with voters outside of the Republican Party can have a major effect in the results of the upcoming midterm elections. Trump has an approval rating of just above 40 percent, versus roughly 53 percent who disapprove of him, according to FiveThirtyEight's rolling average of polls. In August, Trump's campaign manager Paul Manafort was convicted on charges of financial fraud.

The poll also showed the bind Mr. Trump is in.
