In Germany, the 512GB iPhone XS Max costs 1.649 euros or $1,917, a $468 difference.

Part of that probably has to do with the fact there were lots of leaks ahead of Apple's keynote event, so the news wasn't unexpected.

In addition to the phones, Apple announced the next generation of the Apple Watch, complete with a surprising new feature approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that allows users to gather and track heart data.

Apple iPhone Xr models rest on a table during a launch event on September 12, 2018, in Cupertino, California. Both the XS and XS Max look like last year's iPhone X, including that iconic notch. With the XR, which was until recently rumoured to be the XC, the physical home button on iPhones has now officially been consigned to history. Apple promised a few other improvements over last year's model that will require some real-world tests to vet: better cameras, a faster processor and a slightly longer battery life. Apple's brought back the "S" model, which means this model looks largely the same as the X from a year ago, but the guts of the phone have been beefed up in all the ways you'd expect. It comes equipped with a 12MP wide-angle camera with an all-new sensor and 1.4 million pixels (the same as in the iPhone XS and XS Max).

Apple released this photo on Weibo of CEO Tim Cook (right) and chief designer Jony Ive looking at the iPhone XR.

The relatively small changes to its lineup, following last year's overhauled iPhone X, were widely expected by investors, who sent the company's shares down 1.5% in early trades.

Some of you might rightly be wondering: What about my not-so-huge hands?

Apple says the new watch will be able to detect an irregular heartbeat and start an emergency call if it detects that a user has fallen down. Both the new iPhones will be succeeding the existing iPhone X. It has the same basic design of the iPhone X and Xs, with a large edge-to-edge screen. It's not a flagship device but it's price point suggests it would at least, like an iPhone 8 Plus, have features like a secondary camera. What's new is that Apple filled out the "forehead" and "chin" area with screen, giving you the whopping 6.5 inches. Samsung launched its Note line in 2011 with a 5.3-inch phone that seemed comical at the time.

As has been the case with so many smartphone innovations in the past, such as Near Field Communication (NFC) or wireless charging, Android manufacturers have been first in terms of adoption, but Apple's union of hardware and software means it has been the one to take them mainstream. As a result, many have pointed out that it sounds much like "excess" and 'excess Max'.

'These phones really look wonderful, but "iPhone XS Max" is the worst product name Apple has come up with in this century, ' Twitter user @gilbert said. Will it be augmented reality, auto, wearables?
