Boston Celtics guard Jabari Bird was arrested over the weekend and arraigned Thursday on a series of disturbing charges, and the team has finally chose to address the situation.

Prosecutors allege that Bird strangled his girlfriend, a college student, to the point that she lost consciousness for a period of time.

At the arraignment, Bird was charged with assault and battery with a risky weapon, assault and battery of a family or household member, kidnapping and strangulation, following his arrest over the weekend. When Bird came to, he allegedly texted her and threatened to kill himself if she did not return to the apartment. Bird was originally scheduled to be arraigned on Monday, but that was delayed as he remained hospitalized at St. Elizabeth's Hospital.

Celtics "deeply disturbed" by allegations "Most importantly, our thoughts are with the victim of this incident", the Celtics said in a statement after the arraignment.

The Celtics released a statement after the arraignment, saying the "organization deplores domestic violence of any kind" and offering no further comment.

The team notes that domestic violence issues are handled by the NBA's main office.

Bird, who pleaded not guilty, was released on $50,000 bail, and he is set to appear in court again October 25, nine days after Boston tips off its regular season.

Police said the incident occurred at Bird's girlfriend's apartment.

What is Bird's employment status with the Celtics?

At the arraignment, one of Bird's attorneys, Brian T. Kelly, said there are "always two sides" to incidents, but acknowledged his client understands the "seriousness of the allegations".

The Boston Celtics are reportedly "deeply disturbed" by allegations against Jabari Bird and are now working with the National Basketball Association and local authorities in assisting on the investigation, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic. Last season he signed a one-year, two-way contract and spent most of the season with the team's G-League affiliate, the Maine Red Claws. He is next due in court October 25.

What is the NBA's domestic violence policy? Pending a league investigation, Silver can also issue a suspension, even if a player is not found guilty. The team said it "will be working with both the league and local authorities to assist in their ongoing investigations".
