Big Brother axed as final series confirmed by Channel 5

Channel 5 said in a statement: "The forthcoming series of Big Brother will be the last - of either celebrity or civilian versions - on Channel 5".

Endemol Shine has hinted a "future opportunities" for a "new chapter" of Big Brother in the United Kingdom after Channel 5 confirmed that this season of the reality show will be the last on the Viacom-owned broadcaster.

They added: "Most importantly, we'd like to thank fans of the show for their support over the last seven years".

A tweet from the show's official Twitter account has now confirmed that both this year's "Celebrity" and civilian series will be the last, ending the franchise's seven-year run on the channel. We'd like to thank Endemol and all of the production team who have worked tirelessly to make the show a success.

"We'd also like to thank our brilliant presenters - Emma (Willis) on Big Brother and Rylan (Clark-Neal) from Bit On The Side - for their consummate professionalism, Marcus (Bentley), the voice of Big Brother and all of the housemates who have created so many memorable moments".

The former X Factor star, 29, also took to social media site to share his thoughts: 'After 6 years working on one of the most iconic shows on television I'm saddened to hear the news Big Brother won't be returning. "We look forward to giving the final series a brilliant sendoff".

Celebrity Big Brother and Big Brother have both been axed and will not return after this year, Channel 5 has confirmed. It has been the biggest privilege being a housemate, a victor and a host on my favourite show on the television.

"To work with Emma, Marcus and the wonderful team on BOTS every day and have made friends for life I'm truly the luckiest guy in the industry".

Endemol released a statement shortly after Channel 5's announcement to say they were "disappointed not to reach an agreement with Channel 5" over the future of the show. I learned how to host a show on the job here and I'll be forever grateful for the opportunity'. The final series of Big Brother starts tonight at 9pm.

Since then, Mark Owen, Bex, Chantelle Houghton, Shilpa Shetty, Ulrika Jonsson, Alex Reid, Paddy Doherty, Denise Welch, Julian Clary, Rylan Clark, Charlotte Crosby, Jim Davidson, Gary Busey, Katie Price, James Hill, Scotty T, Stephen Bear, Coleen Nolan, Sarah Harding, Courtney Act and Ryan Thomas have all been crowned winners.

Meanwhile, Dowling's stint as the show's host lasted two years and he was replaced by Emma Willis who continues to host the show today.

Other contestants are from Suffolk, Glasgow, Barnsley, Brazil, Wales, London, among other locations and include a "semi-professional footballer", a bartender, a "spiritual adviser", a carer, and a bricklayer.
