Honouring the best in music videos from the past year, the awards have typically been one of the most outrageous red carpets, and inside is no different. Jennifer Lopez will receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award and is set to perform some of her greatest hits during the ceremony. During her heartfelt speech, she thanked her manager Benny Medina, mother, children, and fans. After shouting out her fellow nominees, she turned the attention to her loyal Camilizers, telling them, "The relationship that I have with you guys is a forever thing". She called Rodriguez, who filmed her performance with his phone, "my twin soul".

As she accepted her Best New Artist accolade, she proudly proclaimed she had defied her critics. The rapper, in her well-known silly demeanor, "opened" the show - not with a performance, but with cute jokes. "I had a baby. and now I'm still winning awards".

Cardi B, who gave birth last month, won three awards and said people told her she was "gambling your career" when she made a decision to become a mother.

This year's VMAs telecast was notable for its high-profile no-shows, including The Carters (that'd be Beyoncé and Jay-Z), Drake, Childish Gambino, Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran - all of whom were shut out of the night's biggest prizes. But only Cardi B and Grande were on hand for the evening's festivities.
