Novak Djokovic finally mastered the one tournament that has eluded him, beating nemesis Roger Federer 6-4, 6-4 on Sunday for his first Western & Southern Open championship.

Djokovic, a champion in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid, Rome, Canada, Shanghai and Paris, has lost in five previous finals at the Western and Southern Open, three times to Federer, but he was not to be denied on Sunday. Djokovic broke that streak to go up 4-3 in the opening set, prompting Federer to mutter angrily.

"Thanks for letting me win here once", Djokovic joked to Federer at the trophy presentation.

"It's been a roller-coaster week", he added after players dealt for days with lengthy rain interruptions.

The pair had not played since the 2016 Australian Open semi-finals more than two and a half years ago.

Djokovic completed a long comeback from elbow surgery by winning his fourth Wimbledon title last month.

Federer said: "Congratulations to Novak for your unbelievable effort not just this week, but throughout your whole career, it is an wonderful achievement". With the ATP Finals, all four Majors and Davis Cup crown already in his collection, Novak has cemented his status of one of the greatest players of all time once again, setting the record that will hardly be repeated anytime soon.

Federer was under pressure from the start, saving two break points before holding to win the first game. The main elements in Novak's win were his awesome return, the overall performance on serve and domination from the baseline and in the shortest rallies where Federer should have had the advantage.

Federer broke for a 2-0 lead in the second set but gave the break back immediately as he double faulted to give Djokovic a break point which the Serb promptly converted.

Federer's game was off - 28 unforced errors - and Djokovic took full advantage.

But it began to unravel as the Swiss double-faulted to yield a break point, dropping serve as Djokovic moved ahead 4-3.
