Bertens, ranked 17th in the world, beat Romania's Halep 2-6, 7-6 (8/6), 6-2 in the women's final of the combined WTA and ATP hardcourt tournament.

A clinical Halep dominated the first set, taking just half an hour to take the opener 6-2.

The second set was more intense as Sabalenka pulled level at 4-4 before Halep took the next game.

Bertens was then rewarded by her persistent aggression, as she reached set point in that game when her strong backhand rolled over the net after clipping the tape, but Halep persevered and held on for 5-5, as the players inexorably moved towards the tiebreak.

Halep would not need another chance, closing out the match on the next point.

"I was a little bit exhausted, but it was an fantastic week", said Halep.

The set went to a tie-break and, after scoring four points in a row, Bertens later saved championship point before taking the set.

"Maybe once I will win one because I love to play here", said Halep.

Kvitova had 48 unforced errors in the match, including eight double faults, and lost serve seven times in her third marathon three-setter in the Cincinnati sun.
