Weather officials expect Lane to become a major hurricane tonight and to move west or west-northwest over the next few days.

"A motion between west and west-northwest is expected during the entire forecast period, and Lane is forecast to cross into the central Pacific basin on Saturday", the NHC said.

TS Lane is expected to strengthen rapidly, whipping up hurricane force winds by late Thursday or early Friday morning, likely becoming at least a Category 3 hurricane by the weekend.

National Hurricane Center forecasters will monitor the cyclone until it enters the Central Pacific basin on Saturday, at which point forecasters at the Honolulu-based Central Pacific Hurricane Center will assume responsibility.

Six computer forecast models predict Lane's center will pass south of Hawaii next week, but the outer bands still could bring strong winds to the islands if the center gets close enough.

But at this time, it remains uncertain whether Lane will directly affect the islands next week.
